The Team

Angela Silmon BSc PhD
Chief Executive Officer

Angela began her career in the laboratory with a PhD in molecular neuroscience and postdoctoral research in the disease Cystic Fibrosis, moving to business development at Newcastle University with a focus on the development of point of care diagnostics, lab on a chip and sensor platforms for a range of commercial companies.

Following two successful years in the Business Development Director role, her progression to Chief Executive will see the continued growth of NewGene in the delivery of molecular genetic testing and diagnostics services to clinical specialists and the establishment of research and development programmes with clinicians, academia and the pharmaceutical industry.

Ann Curtis BSc, PhD, DipRCPath
Scientific Director

Ann began her scientific career as a researcher with the Medical Research Council and then entered the clinical genetics diagnostic field. She was instrumental in developing such services for the NHS in both Edinburgh and Newcastle, and worked as head of the highly regarded NHS Molecular Genetics Laboratory in Newcastle for 16 years.

She is an HCPC registered Clinical Scientist, a former chair of the Clinical Molecular Genetics Society and a former member of the UK Genetics Testing Network.

Dr Ben Chaffey
Business Development Manager

Ben has recently joined the NewGene team to support development of the business, particularly with regard to expansion of the contract clinical and pre-clinical research work the company undertakes alongside its core clinical diagnostics services.

With a PhD in Applied Immunobiology, Ben developed expertise in surface-active chemistry and protein biochemistry through post-doctoral research and as a development scientist for HBI Ltd. There followed a transition through manufacturing management to a customer-facing role, providing expert training and promotional support, particularly in international markets.

More recently while at Biosignatures Ltd his role became more focused on managing clinical operations and business development and enabled the continued development of an interest in personalised medicine and companion diagnostics, particularly in relation to targeted therapeutics, which contributed significantly to his decision to join NewGene.

Jane Lisgo
Laboratory Manager

Jane has many years of laboratory management experience in the NHS setting and came to NewGene from the position of Laboratory Manager (Senior Genetic Technologist) for the Northern Molecular Genetics Service. She demonstrates a wide range of skills; excellent technical knowledge, resource and staff management, training, strategic planning, that all work towards the delivery of a high level of clinical service.
