Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer - BRCA 1 and BRCA 2

BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 are tumour suppressor genes and specific inherited mutations in either can increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as several other types of cancer. BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutations account for about 20 to 25 percent of hereditary breast cancers and about 5 to 10 percent of all breast cancers. In addition, mutations in BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 account for around 15 percent of ovarian cancers overall.
